Gold, white gold, platinum, palladium, titanium, or silver are the most commonly used metals in making of fine jewellery. . Out of all the precious metals, Gold is the most preferred and widely used metal in the Jewellery industry. Most American and European gold jewellery is made of an alloy of gold, the purity of which is stated in karats, indicated by a number followed by the letter K. The pure gold (24k) is yellow in colour and very soft and therefore it is mixed with other metals like copper, silver and palladium to make it into an alloy of lower carat of Gold , typically 22k, 18k, 14k or 9k, which are harder and usually different in colour. The most common colours of Gold found in jewellery are rose, yellow and white but other colours such as blue, purple, green and black can also be achieved by mixing them with different metals.

Eighteen-carat gold containing 25% copper is found in antique and Russian jewellery and has a distinct copper cast, creating rose gold. Fourteen-carat gold-copper alloy is nearly identical in color to certain bronze alloys. Blue gold can be made by alloying with iron and purple gold can be made by alloying with aluminum. Blue gold is more brittle and therefore more difficult to work with when making jewellery.and hence is used for making specialized jewellery only.

Fourteen and eighteen carat gold alloys with silver alone appear greenish-yellow and are referred to as green gold. White gold alloys can be made with palladium, silver and other white metals, but the palladium alloys are more expensive than others.

In Britain, 9k gold is most widely used, primarily because it is the hardest alloy with only 37.5% pure gold. 14k gold is usually used in United States and other European countries whereas 22k is often referred to as Indian gold and is most used in Thailand, India and other Asian countries. Nowadays, we can also find 10k, 15k, 20k, 21k and 23k gold alloys. 10k and 15k are typically American alloys whereas rest are Middle Eastern gold.
